What Is The Role of the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner?

The Information and Privacy Commissioner is appointed by the lieutenant-governor-in-council and reports to the legislature, not to the government of the day or to any one minister. The role of the office is to:

• Resolve appeals and investigate public complaints in accordance with the provisions of the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act and the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, independently of government
• Oversee whether institutions comply with the access and privacy provisions of the acts
• Conduct research on access and privacy issues
• Provide advice on proposed government legislation and programs
• Conduct public education on Ontario's access and privacy scheme
